Career Exploration at Home

It's never too early to start thinking about a career! Here are a few great tips and tricks to help your homeschooler start career exploration at home!

The primary objective of career exploration in our homeschools should be rooted in self-awareness. We always start with teens knowing their aptitudes – the things they are naturally great at. After there is a firm foundation established, we begin career exploration. You can assign research projects and writing assignments based on careers that are a good match for their aptitude. Teens are able to do Virtual Job Shadowing for most careers through YouTube to see what a day in that career looks like. As early as 14, teens can begin to see what skills will be needed in a career field and start learning those skills. Math lessons can look like salary research, income tax differences by state and income fluctuation by region. Especially for teens with an entrepreneurial spirit, you will be amazed at how quickly they find motivation. You can show interest in their career exploration by asking really great questions.

3 Free Art Projects for Your Homeschool

Create Your Homeschool -

Free Art Projects for Your Homeschool We all know art is a vital part of homeschooling, but… Sometimes it can be so overwhelming! That’s why I’ve put together this resource for you. I’ve gathered free art projects that you can do with your kids or that they can do on their own. These projects span ages 3-13, and I’ve listed them in age order. Enjoy! Teal Things Project Ages: 3-6 Supplies: clipart packet, teal paper, scissors, glue, teal craft items Is anyone else’s favorite color teal? Lili at Barefoot and Bilingual loves this color, so she put together a free teal clipart packet. I’ve outlined a teal things sorting craft. This helps young kids identify a color NOT on the rainbow which helps their observation skills and color awareness. Here’s how you can use this for your littles! -Download this free clipart packet. -Print out on paper. -Cut out/have your child cut out clipart pieces. This will depend on your child’s skill level. -Glue to a piece of construction paper. -Gather other things around your craft room to add. -Have fun! Click here to get this freebie!   How to Draw a Tiger Art & Writing Activity Age: 5-10 Supplies: printable worksheet, guided instructions, pencil, eraser, black marker, crayons. Did you know art is a perfect medium for learning skill subjects? I have found that even reluctant writers enjoy writing when their story is accompanied by a drawing they just made! In this art & writing activity, students learn to draw and color a tiger step-by-step. Then they write a story to explore their tiger even more. I differentiated this activity into 5-6 year old steps and 7-10 year old. A 5-6 year old will likely need a grownup’s help with the instructions and writing. A 7-10 year old will likely be able to complete this project on their own. Click here to go to this resource!   One Lantern to Rule Them All Ages: 8-13 Supplies: a pencil, white pencil, xacto knife with fresh blade, black paper, a ruler, and a space to cut on. Any other Lord of the Rings fans out there? This project is a great family collaboration craft that will bring you and your elementary-aged children together. Here’s an excerpt from the blog Raising Seidlings where you can find this free tutorial! “Then my son took a glue stick and glued together the scenes for each lantern. He started with the largest piece first, the background piece. Then the second largest and so on until we were adding final details. In this one it was the purple sky glued to the white, then the larger mountain scene, then smaller, then smaller. After that we added the stars and moon. We glued it all into the back of the lantern.” Click here to go to this tutorial! Wishing an art teacher could just come and teach for you? How to Choose a Preschool Homeschool Curriculum

How to Choose a Preschool Homeschool Curriculum

How to Choose a Preschool Homeschool Curriculum You’ve decided to homeschool your preschooler, but you’re unsure where to begin. Luckily, homeschooling doesn’t have to be a complicated process. A quality homeschool curriculum will save you time and energy and ensure your child is set on a path to success. Follow this guide to learn how to choose a preschool homeschool curriculum! Sample the Curriculum The first step to choosing a preschool homeschool curriculum is to sample it! You can read all the articles and reviews you want, but you won’t know if a preschool homeschool curriculum will work for you and your kid(s) until you try it. Once you receive a sample of the curriculum, you’ll need to ask yourself a couple of questions. We’ll go into each question in more depth later in this article. Is this curriculum conducive to homeschool learning? Will the curriculum keep your child engaged? Does the curriculum align with a scope and sequence? Is the curriculum accessible/easy to use? Does the curriculum offer resources and support? As you preview curriculums, keep these questions in mind. Answering them will help you determine if the curriculum is a good fit. Find a Curriculum Designed for Homeschooling While there are many great preschool homeschool curriculums out there, not all of them are specifically designed to meet the needs of homeschoolers. When considering what homeschooling style was right for you, you most likely looked for a style that would best fit your family’s needs. You need to do the same with the curriculum you choose. Standard curriculums are designed for classroom learning. They assume that your preschooler will have peers to interact with and access to materials that you may not have. | Related: A creative approach to building your own homeschool lesson plans Consider Montessori Homeschooling Structured homeschooling methods like virtual school, school-at-home and the classical style may be quicker and easier to implement than others, but they require significantly more from you and your children in terms of time committed to instruction and paperwork. And, they disallow one of my favorite benefits of homeschooling: schedule flexibility. Montessori homeschooling is an incredible choice to make when looking at what homeschool curriculum to choose for your preschooler. That said, it does require conscious efforts in terms of parenting that you may not be used to. You will need to be able to guide them gently, without limiting your child’s ability to choose what, how, or when they learn. If you and your children can self-direct and have respect for one another, Montessori may be a good fit. Ensure that Your Curriculum is Designed for Student Interest One of the key principles of Montessori education is that when a topic interests people, they’re likely to learn better. The goal is for your child to want to learn rather than feel forced to learn. Homeschooling provides a unique opportunity for you to control your child’s learning environment. Preschool is a time of critical development for children. During this time, you want your child to learn to love learning, not loathe it. The main goal of your curriculum should be to ignite curiosity in your child. You want them to feel proud of what they’ve learned. A curriculum with a child-centered educational approach will aid in this process. Choose a Curriculum with a Scope and Sequence It’s no secret that homeschooling a preschooler can overwhelm parents. If you’re just starting, you may feel like you’re drowning in standards and topics! But keep reading to learn How to choose a preschool homeschool curriculum that’s perfect for your family! You need a learning program that meets or exceeds standards. A scope and sequence can help you determine the order in which skills should be taught. The goal of Montessori learning is to follow your child, but a simplified scope and sequence can help you maintain a sense of structure. A quality curriculum will include a scope and sequence that lays everything out for you. This will make it easier for you to guide your child toward learning opportunities. Select an Accessible, Inclusive Curriculum As a homeschooling parent, your goal should be to support your child as they engage in self-regulated learning. You shouldn’t have to spend hours searching for instructional resources. Save yourself time and frustration by choosing a preschool homeschool curriculum that does the planning for you. Wouldn’t it be nice if all you had to do was select a lesson, print it, laminate it, and cut it out? An accessible curriculum will be easy to navigate. You should love working on schoolwork with your child. If they notice your frustration with the curriculum, they’ll subconsciously take on that frustration as their own. With Multisori’s preschool homeschool curriculum, the lesson instructions are direct. We list the supplies needed and a “What to Do” section. Kids, especially at preschool age, love to ask, “why?” They’re learning and exploring, and it’s important that they feel comfortable enough to ask questions. Multisori’s curriculum also includes a “Why Multisori Provides this Material” section. You can use this section to answer the never-ending “why” questions. By providing a solid answer to “why,” you’re able to encourage curiosity in your kid(s). Look for a Curriculum that Offers Support One of the downsides to homeschooling is that you may feel alone in your educational journey. When choosing a preschool homeschool curriculum, choose one with a supportive community that you can turn to for help. A strong support system can make or break a homeschooling parent. Homeschooling your preschooler doesn’t have to be complicated, but that doesn’t mean it’s easy! Studies have shown that parents want to be involved in their students’ education. A homeschool support group provides a way for parents to continue to grow and learn alongside their children. In addition, parents will be surrounded by other homeschooling parents in the same walk of life. With the Multisori curriculum, you’ll unlock access to a support group full of resources and friendly faces. Homeschooling moms say they love the M3… [read more]

How to create a curriculum map for your homeschool

homeschool yearly planning - create a curriculum map, what is a curriculum map

A curriculum map is perfect for organizing your thoughts around all the things you’d like to teach in your homeschool for the year. They work for any age / grade by creating a structure that will help you look ahead and make a plan for how to reach the goals you’ve set in your homeschool. To get started, you’ll want to determine the number of days you’ll be homeschooling in a year. Then divide the year into smaller groups. For example, if you’re homeschool requirement is 180 days of learning per year, then that would be 36 weeks of school. When you divide that number by the number of weeks in a month (four), it comes to nine months total. You could create a map with nine “semesters” (or whatever you’d like to call them). Or, you could divide it out even further to have shorter learning markers. It’s up to you! Once you determine the number of semesters or units in your homeschool year, you can move on to the content and set some goals. The name of the curriculum map game is to simply work backwards. You’ll want to start with the end in mind. What big goals do you want your child to reach this year? Are there any specific learning objectives you need to conquer? Then, you’ll make a list of all major topics you’d like to teach! Consider bringing your kids into this part of the planning process! Ask them what they’d like to learn about. Determine if there are any areas they’re struggling in or lack confidence in. Write all of these things down… It’s the beginning of your curriculum map! From this point, you can assign each topic to a month or week that makes the most sense (learning about things that happen in the spring in September, probably won’t be that much fun). But keep in mind that some topics will build on each other. So you’ll want to plan them accordingly with enough room to add on. Once you’ve completed an overview for the year, you can then break down each unit even further. Simply repeat this same process on a smaller scale. Rather than writing “BIRDS” for the month of March, you’ll break it down by week and even by day. Example: North American Birds – Types, diet, habitat, etc. Here’s another example of how you can work backward to create a Curriculum Map. | Related: Summer Sensory Bin Ideas In pre-k phonics, a low-hanging fruit to teach would simply be to work your way through every letter of the alphabet! Learn each letter’s name, the sound it makes, and how to create it. So, It would be fairly easy to simply spend a full week on each letter. Then, add a few “review” weeks built in. EXAMPLE: Week 1- Letter A Create a lesson plan that would provide a lot of opportunities with the letter A. Eat foods that begin with the letter A (applesauce, avocado, asparagus, bake something with all-purpose flour, etc.) Create the letter out of different materials (pom-poms and glue, play-doh, sticks, etc.) Read books that had main ideas or main characters with the letter (The Lady With The Alligator Purse, Amazing Airplanes, Hey Little Ant, etc.), Work on sight words for the letter A (and, add, any, etc.). You may realize that you do not need a full week for each letter, and that’s okay! If so, simply adjust the map as you go along. Nothing is set in stone in homeschooling, mama. To make curriculum mapping a little bit easier for you, I’ve created a curriculum map template that you can download and get started with asap!   Here’s a few things to keep in mind when you’re creating a curriculum map for your homeschool: Check your homeschool laws (if your location requires any). You’ll always want to make sure that whatever you are planning will be aligned with what’s required from you as a homeschool teacher each year. Does the curriculum you’ve purchased for the year have a set timeline in place for completing it? If so, consider using it to help guide your mapping! Personally, I do not bind myself to the exact days they have listed to complete each page in a curriculum we have. But I do like to use it as a guide when planning. If there’s a subject or topic you think your kids would like to spend more time on (like a really cool unit study!) then don’t be afraid to allow extra time in your curriculum map for that! The goal is to create a passion inside of our kids to keep learning… If they can have fun while doing it, even better! Don’t forget to include time for holidays and scheduled breaks in your curriculum map! Using these tips, and grabbing the curriculum map template, will help you get started with setting goals for your homeschool and stay organized!
