This “Build a Snowman” Book Project allows your students to be creative as they review STORY ELEMENTS for ANY book! Students will choose a holiday story, winter or Christmas themed book or story and build a snowman as they search and locate the main story elements of their chosen book.
This literacy activity is a great review for reading comprehension and story sequencing for elementary students and early readers.
You can also use this snowman craft as a follow up activity for students to review a book they read in a small reading group or with a book club!

3 pages of printable snowman pieces for students to build their snowman book project including…
- Snowman’s top hat – Students will record their name, the book title, author, something they learned from the story, and the theme of the book.
- Snowman’s head
- Snowman’s scarf – Students will record their favorite part of the story.

How Can You Use This Winter Book Project in Your Classroom?
- Reading response activities are a great tool to use in your literacy centers, writing stations, literacy stations, or writing centers. Whatever you call them, this book project is a perfect literacy activity to add to your elementary teacher toolkit!
- Have students work on this writing project as part of their morning work.
- Introduce the activity to students the day before you have a sub, and it is an engaging and thoughtful activity for students to work on when you are absent and have a substitute.
- Use this holiday coloring activity during indoor recess for those students who love a little extra creativity.
- Use it to challenge early finishers.
- How about using this holiday reading response activity in your guided reading groups? Students can respond to the small group book in a creative way!
- Do your students participate in book clubs? Plan for a special round of interactive literature circles by allowing students to respond to their reading by creating a cute snowman.
