The Doorbell Rang is a children’s book written and illustrated by Pat Hutchins. The story follows a group of children who eagerly anticipate eating freshly baked cookies, only to have their excitement turn to disappointment when more and more guests arrive, causing the cookies to be divided into smaller and smaller portions.
This book provides an excellent opportunity to introduce the concept of division to young learners in a fun and engaging way. This unit contains graphic organizers, video and pdf links to book, and chocolate chip cookie template to be copied for some problems. Also included are math problems to solve individually and with partners/group to serve as a way to have class meetings to continue discussing “sharing equally” concept. These lessons can lead to the concept of division and the beginning of fractions.
