INFERENCING STRATEGIES TO USE WHILE READING

By: Elly Elementary

When engaging in reading comprehension, several inferencing strategies can be employed to enhance understanding. One effective strategy is activating prior knowledge, where readers draw upon their existing knowledge and experiences to make connections with the text. Inferring meaning from context is another valuable approach, where readers use surrounding words or phrases to deduce the meaning of unfamiliar words or phrases. Making predictions based on clues within the text is also beneficial, as it fosters engagement and encourages readers to anticipate what might happen next. Additionally, analyzing characters’ actions, thoughts, and dialogue can assist in inferring their motivations, feelings, or intentions. Lastly, recognizing patterns, themes, or symbols throughout the text can aid in forming deeper interpretations and uncovering underlying messages. By employing these inferencing strategies, readers can navigate complex texts more effectively and derive richer meaning from their reading experiences.
