The Draw and Explore Art series is a great way to combine art and drawing. A short background of each painting and its artist is given. Each is followed by a simplified image of the painting on a grid. (Some images are more simplified than others, so a range of simpler and harder images is included.) Next, students can do one or all of the assignments that follow. They can draw half of the image in a grid that shows the left half of the picture, half of the image in a grid that shows the right half of the picture, or the entire image on an empty grid. This makes the unit completely flexible for both left-handed and right-handed students. Ten review questions and an answer key are also included. Famous paintings included are A Young Girl Reading (Jean-Honore Fragonard), American Gothic (Grant Wood), Blue Horse I (Franz Marc), The Milkmaid (Johannes Vermeer), Mona Lisa (Leonardo da Vinci), The Scream (Edvard Munch), The Starry Night (Vincent van Gogh), The Storm on the Sea of Galilee (Rembrandt), Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte (Georges Seurat), and Washington Crossing the Delaware (Emanuel Gottlieb Leutze). 31 pages total. Ages 8-13.
