Over time, Leigh’s letters to Mr. Henshaw become more personal and he shares details about his life, including his struggles with his parents’ recent divorce and his desire to become a writer himself. Along the way, Leigh learns valuable lessons about perseverance, friendship, and the importance of expressing oneself through writing.

The guide includes a variety of activities and exercises that focus on developing students’ reading comprehension skills, such as vocabulary building, summarization, and analysis of literary devices. Additionally, the guide provides discussion questions and writing prompts that encourage students to reflect on the themes and messages of the book, and to explore their own creativity and writing abilities. Overall, the guide aims to engage students with the story of Leigh Botts and to inspire a love of reading and writing in the classroom.

Dear Mr. Henshaw by Beverly Cleary is about Leigh, Boyd Henshaw’s number one fan ever since he was in second grade. Now in sixth grade, Leigh lives with his mother and is the new kid in school. He’s lonely, troubled by the absence of his father, a cross-country trucker, and angry because a mysterious thief steals from his lunchbag. Then Leigh’s teacher assigns a letter-writing project. Naturally Leigh chooses to write to Mr. Henshaw.
