As a homeschool mama, I am ALWAYS looking for no-prep, fun ways to practice handwriting! 🙋🏽♀️
I don’t know about you, but my kids absolutely loathe handwriting practice. And quite frankly, the free handwriting printables can be pretty boring these days.
When our oldest son sees a handwriting worksheet full of a LOT of blank space for him to write the same letter or same word over and over until the sheet is full… He is overwhelmed.
And honestly… I am too!
There has to be a better way to practice handwriting in our homeschool!
So, I set out to change that “traditional” method of handwriting (because you know I am all about ditching the traditional methods of homeschooling to create a homeschool we love! 😉), and I created something fun & engaging to help him practice handwriting at home!
And now I want to share these free handwriting printables with you too!
Before we get to the free handwriting printables, let’s talk about handwriting in your homeschool!
Why is handwriting important in your homeschool?
Handwriting is an important skill to nurture in any homeschool. Not only is it a practical tool for taking notes and completing assignments, but it also helps children to develop fine motor skills, hand-eye coordination, and self-expression.
Not to mention, some studies have even linked handwriting to increased creativity and better memory recall!
Incorporating handwriting into your homeschool curriculum doesn’t have to be complicated.
Simple activities like having your child write out their spelling words or practice letter formation can help them develop their writing skills.
You can also explore more creative approaches, such as having your child write out stories, poems, or other pieces of creative writing. Not only will this help them to hone their writing skills, it can also be a great way to inspire their imagination.
Handwriting will also help your child develop important communication skills.
As they get older, having the ability to write clearly and concisely will be a valuable tool for them as they write essays, job applications, and other documents.
By making handwriting a part of your curriculum, you can help your child develop a valuable tool that will serve them for many years to come.
Here are 5 helpful tips to make handwriting more enjoyable in your homeschool!
- Take frequent breaks. Writing for long periods of time can become tedious and frustrating, so it’s important to give your child a break to stretch, get a snack, or just take some time to relax.
- Use fun tools. Not all handwriting has to be done with a pencil and paper. Try using different writing utensils like markers or colored pencils, or even trying writing with a paintbrush on paper or a chalkboard.
- Use fun paper. Using different paper can help keep handwriting fun and interesting. Try using lined paper, graph paper, or even a whiteboard. You can also use different colors of paper to keep it exciting.
- Set up a comfortable workspace. Making sure your child has a comfortable and organized workspace is key to keeping handwriting enjoyable. Make sure your child has enough space to work and the necessary supplies (like pencils, erasers, etc.) to help them complete their work.
- Make it a game. Handwriting doesn’t have to be boring! Try making a game out of it. You can have a competition to see who can write the most words in a certain amount of time, or you can make up fun stories and have your child write them down.

WHAT IS A SPIRAL REVIEW WORKSHEET?
I came across the idea of a spiral review a couple of years ago! Public school teachers use these a lot to cut down on paper waste & send home early elementary homework! With any spiral review worksheet, my son sees a full page of “work” to do, but because it’s designed to be a spiral review, he thinks he’s cheating the system by only completing one line per day 🤭
Most of the spiral review sets typically offer different math skills reviews – I have yet to see one for another subject – Until now!

This is one week’s worth of our six-week spiral review printable for handwriting practice!
Each day, the student will work their way left to right (or in whatever order they’d like to complete the row – sometimes, following the direction isn’t worth the hassle, #amiright…) – completing one row each day (kinda like a spiral down the page!)
In these particular free handwriting printables, we have provided a tracing option, as well as a freewriting option underneath!
Each day introduces the student to three new winter-themed words! You can take the spiral review further by researching each word, learn definitions, or even use them as spelling words for the week!
When the week is over, your student will have a completed spiral review handwriting practice page! 🎉

Now, just in case you fall in love with spiral reviews, like I have, I’ve also included a blank spiral review for you!
You can use this to practice new words, use the lines to write spelling words, practice letter writing, etc.
The most important thing to remember is that these free handwriting printables work best when the student has already been introduced to handwriting!
It’s called a spiral REVIEW afterall 🥰
